After the conference...
The 17th International Conference on Aluminum Alloys ICAA17, initially scheduled to take place in Grenoble on June 14-18, 2020 and then postponed to October 26-29, 2020, finally took place in virtual conference mode. This conference was co-organized by SIMaP- Université Grenoble Alpes and C-TEC Constellium and had the financial support of Constellium, Grenoble INP, Réseau National de la Métallurgie, and Grenoble Alpes Métropole. 223 presentations from 19 countries were presented virtually. The number of registrations to the virtual platform was slightly more than 400.
The hosting platform for the virtual conference was managed by the company Insight-Outside (Montbonnot Saint Martin) to whom we would like to extend our warmest thanks; the success we have experienced could not have existed without their valuable contribution. This virtual conference was an uncertain adventure until the first day of the conference, and serene and happy at its closing. It is interesting to note that the participants particularly appreciated the viewing of the oral presentations which were available in video format one week before the official start of the conference, and could therefore be viewed at everyone's own pace and time. The "synchronous" time of the conference was then devoted to plenary lectures, followed by thematic discussion sessions consisting of 4 to 8 presentations, each one hour long. Thus, the time allocated to the discussion that took place live via the virtual platform was longer than for a traditional conference. The exchanges were enriched! Of course, we all missed the informal face-to-face discussions, but the health crisis gave us no choice.
The way international conferences are run will most certainly change, even after the end of the health crisis. The environmental footprint of an international conference is far from negligible with the travel involved; this cannot be ignored. On the other hand, the economic crisis caused by the health crisis will lead us to reduce the cost associated with these international events if we want to maintain a sufficient audience. We will probably move towards mixed conferences where face-to-face and virtual conferences will coexist; their modalities remain to be invented.

The conference platform is open!!
Since monday, 19th of October, the conference platform is open for viewing all the 220 scientific presentations. If you are registered, you should have received an email for connecting to this platform. If not, check your spambox.
If you have not yet received this email, we invite you to connect directly on the link above and click on forgot password. Please note that the connection email is only sent to folders that are sold out. If this is not the case, please pay your registration fee to access the platform.
Once on the platform, you will see the program organized by symposia and sub-topics. These help you find the presentations you are interested to view. You can view them at your most convenient time and in the order you want.
Next week, starting on the 26th, the synchronous conference time will start. Each day will start by one hour of plenary conference, followed by two one-hour sessions for discussing the papers of each topic. There will be at most 5 discussion sessions in parallel at a given time to choose from. These discussion sessions will take place through a Zoom visioconference interface. You can ask questions in advance using each presentations chatbox, or wait until the discussion session and ask questions directly. The authors will be present to answer, of course.
In addition to these official discussion times, the platform offers the possibility to launch specific visiorooms between participants, at any time, for informal discussion. Please take the opportunity to use this facility to meet with friends and colleagues and to continue discussions that would have been interrupted by lack of time.
All the times in the program are Paris times. Be aware that France is changing time on the 25th of October, just before the conference! You can consult the exact time difference during the conference week using for example https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html
Information for presenting authors: a presonal link to upload your presentation on the conference platform has been sent to you by email. If you have not received this email, please check your spam box. In case of problem please contact:
Due to the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the measures restricting circulation in France and internationally, we have decided, in agreement with the International Committee, that ICAA17 will be a virtual conference.
You can watch the teaser video below:
You will find details on the format of this virtual event in the "virtual conference" page of the website. Live discussion sessions will be held to help maintaining the social link, which is the heart of why we want to attend such events. The scientific presentations wil be made widely available to the participants with much reduced registration prices and up to one year availability on the platform. We believe that this new conference format, while not fully replacing the traditional conferences, can lead to a different way of sharing science!
The dates are unchanged:
26-29 October 2020, on a Vimeo Virtual Event platform
The call for contributions is now closed, but you can still register as a participant until the conference date. This will grant you access to the full set of more than 220 presentations, whose titles and authors you can now find in the online scientific program, and to teh libve discussion sessions organized for each session. The Vimeo virtual conference platform will allow you to interact with other participants by messages or in virtual visioconference meeting rooms.
Welcome !
Following the 16th edition of the International Conference on Aluminium Alloys (ICAA) held in Montreal, Canada, we are pleased to host virtually the 17th edition organized in Grenoble, France, 26-29 October 2020.
We will be delighted to welcome scientists from academia and industry to exchange through discussions on the science and application of Aluminium Alloys.
Grenoble is not only a vibrant city in the heart of the French Alps, but one of the cradles of the aluminium industry and an active city for higher education, innovation and R&D.
We look forward to seeing you virtually during the conference week!
Alexis Deschamps, Professor, Grenoble Institute of Technology
